Tanzania Safaris
An essential destination
on Tanzania safaris is Serengeti National Park, the country's largest
and most famous reserve. With 5,700 square miles of plains stretching
as far as the eye can see, the Serengeti is home to one of the most
diverse wild animal populations on Earth. The greatest density of wildlife
found on Tanzania safaris is in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, known
as "Africa's Eden." Safari participants descend nearly 2,000
feet into the Ngorongoro crater to observe large herds of zebra, wildebeest,
gazelle and their predators.
Many Tanzania safaris
explore Lake Manyara National Park. With dense forests, bush plains,
cliffs and hot springs, the diverse land gives rise to abundant wildlife
including impalas, elephants, giraffes, pink flamingos, yellow-billed
storks and the world's largest concentration of baboons. South of Lake
Manyara is Tarangire National Park, which boasts a large elephant population.
In addition to wildlife
viewing, Tanzania safaris might provide opportunities to interact with
the country's indigenous peoples or visit a coffee plantation. A few
safari itineraries venture to the island of Zanzibar, off Tanzania's
coast. Tanzania is also home to Africa's highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro,
whose snowcapped peak soars to 19,340 feet.
Tanzania safaris
are available year-round. The most massive game migrations occur in
April through June and October through December. The best months to
climb Mount Kilimanjaro are the milder spring and fall months of August
through October and January through March.
